An eight game home losing streak and a four game losing streak overall are a thing of the past for the Sharks. Wilmington (8-18) knocked off the 1st Half East Division Champion, Morehead City (20-6) to start the second half on the right foot.
The Sharks notched a base hit in every inning in the 3-1 victory over the Marlins. However, the Sharks also left a season high 15 runners on base.
Morehead City was on the board first in the third. A couple of singles and a Sharks error led to just one run for the visitors. It was the only unearned run that would be charged to Wilmington's starter, Austin Skipper, all night long.
The Wilmington native was dealing on the mound for the Sharks. The New Hanover High School graduate won his first start, lasting seven innings, allowing just the one unearned run on six hits, while striking out four.
The Sharks started the comeback in the fifth. With two outs and two on, Doug Angeli broke out of his slump. The UNCW second baseman was 1-21 coming into the night before his RBI single to tie the game at one.
Wilmington continued to get hits in the sixth and seventh and even left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
In the eight though, the Sharks All-Star stepped up. With runners on first and second with one out, Paxton Wallace singled into right field to give the Sharks a 2-1 advantage. Then, Zach Bridges grounded out with runners on the corners for an insurance run.
In the ninth, Logan Barker (1-0) completed his second inning of work to earn his first win of the summer. Hunter Shepherd (0-3) gave up the two runs in the eighth and lost to the Sharks for the second time this summer.
Wilmington's comeback victory was its sixth of the summer and its third win over Morehead City. Half of the Marlins six losses have come against the Sharks. Wilmington is also the only team in the East Division to beat Morehead City this summer.
