Fayetteville Jumps on Sharks Early

Fayetteville, North Carolina-The Wilmington Sharks found themselves facing another major early deficit in an 11-4 loss to the Fayetteville SwampDogs Tuesday night.  The loss extended the Sharks losing streak to seven games and to a 7-16 record on the season.

Ethan Meece dealt a four pitch walk to begin the first and second innings for the Sharks.  In the first, he was able to get out of the inning with minimal damage giving up just two runs.  In the second, he ran into more trouble when Brett Brown came up with two on and nobody out.  Brown hit a three-run home run to open the lead up to 5-0.  Gabe Austin followed with a single ending the night for Meece.

The SwampDogs then loaded the bases with still nobody out against Sharks reliever Austin Skipper.  Carson Bartels and Pearce Howard hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to extend the lead to 7-0 in the second.

After the Sharks added a run in the top of the third.  Skipper appeared to have settled in and retired the first two he faced in the bottom of the inning.  Brown then reached on a dropped third strike to continue the frame.  Austin followed with another single.  Cameron Phelts then singled both runners home to make it 9-1.

The Sharks began a mini rally when Steven Curry hit a one-out single in the fifth.  Jacob Plastiak then drew a walk and Corey Everett followed with another single to load the bases.  With two outs, Chad Fairey singled home Curry and Plastiak to trim the deficit to 9-3.

Phelts led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to make it 10-3 Fayetteville.  Zachary Bridges answered back with a solo home run to lead off the top of the eighth for the Sharks, making it 10-4.  It was as close as the Sharks would get.

The Sharks will return to the Shark Tank Thursday night against the Holly Springs Salamanders.  It is Thirsty Thursday featuring $1 beers presented by 98.7 Coastal Carolinas Modern Rock.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM with the gates opening at 6:00PM.
